The State of Origin series is an annual best-of-three Rugby League Series played between the “heartland states” of the code in Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. First played in 1980, “Origin” as it is commonly known is the showpiece mid-year event for Rugby League with huge crowds and TV ratings. The Australian team squad, the “Kangaroos” is named after the series.
The 2022 State of Origin series will begin at Accor Stadium in Sydney on Wednesday 8th June and will be followed by games at Perth’s Optus Stadium on Sunday 26th June and will be completed on Wednesday 13th July at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
History
With so many star Queensland rugby league players signing with the richer New South Wales clubs in the 1970s state football was in decline. In an attempt to stimulate interest in representative rugby league matches the State of Origin concept was devised. Rather than players, the state was CURRENTLY playing for, players were now selected on the basis of their HOME state.
The first State of Origin matches was first played in 1980, and the first series was played in 1982. The concept appealed to the age-old parochialism between Queensland and New South Wales league fans and when the legendary Arthur Beetson led his Queensland team to an upset win in the first match. Origin was here to stay!
The Teams
The Queensland Maroons will be coached by first-year coach and former superstar Billy Slater. Despite Queensland hosting all three matches in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Maroons were soundly defeated in the first two games of the series before winning a dead rubber to finish on a high. With a number of Queensland-based teams enjoying good NRL seasons in 2022, hopes are high for an improved effort.
The New South Wales Blues are coached by former Australian captain Brad Fittler. There have been some shock selections, omissions and positional changes in the lead-up to Game 1. The Blues brains trust is going to look like geniuses or fools on Wednesday night. Which will it be?
Bet Types
There are a number of betting markets for State of Origin odds available on Rugby League matches and the State of Origin Series. Some of the main ones are listed below:
Head-to-Head Betting is the simplest bet type. Will the Blues or Maroons win? You pick one team and place a bet on them to win the match. If they win, you win!
Line Betting involves placing a bet on an outcome based on how the bookmaker has handicapped the game. For example, a wager on the NSW +3.5 is a bet on the Blues to either Win the match or not lose by more than 3. This is a particularly popular betting type for bettors who like are sick of losing out in close matches.
Series Bets are a great way to stay involved with the whole State Of Origin Series. Will one team win 3-0 or are we in for a tight 2-1 tussle? Who will score the most tries in the series?
Total Points can also garner good returns, and they are generally viewed as an over/under market. How many points will the two teams score combined in their match? This is a particularly effective method for bettors who believe they have a good feel on HOW the game will be played. Will defence dominate or will the game be a shoot-out?
Exotic & Prop Bets have exploded in popularity in recent years and are a great way to enjoy the Origin matches. It is a bet on the outcome of an event/s or a player’s performance in a particular game. Will Nathan Cleary score a try? Who will make the most tackles? Plenty of research is the key to these bet types.
